When using my IBM ThinkPad T43 (Fedora 7 Linux) with the Synaptics touchpad for browsing the web, often moving my finger across the bottom edge of the touchpad (a common action when clicking and browsing) Firefox will go back a page. This is really annoying, and has caused me to loose mails that I spent some time typing.

My first inclination was to disable this via the xorg.conf configuration of Synaptics touch pad... This is certainly possible. In reading up on the internet as to what the specific configuration option is to disable horizontal scrolling, I came across an excellent Gentoo WiKi article on all of the possible options with respect to the touchpad behavior. It can be found here:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Synaptics_Touchpad

The key point is, that you can disable the horizontal scroll behavior in Firefox and leave the xorg.conf alone. The only place I am really annoyed by the feature is in Firefox, so I thought I would give it a try. To disable the horizontal scroll feature in firefox, go to 'about:config' and set the following variables:

mousewheel.horizscroll.withnokey.action = 0
mousewheel.horizscroll.withnokey.sysnumlines = true

I am trying this now. However, the wiki article above also has all of the possible xorg.conf parameters to reset the Synaptics core behavior - so if this does not work, I can always add the following to the Synaptics section of xorg.conf:

   Option "HorizScrollDelta"  "0"
