Detail
When frequently switching between VMware Windows as a guest on a Linux parent host, occasionally all of my modifier keys would stop working on the Linux side. Not sure what exactly causes this - but it happens relatively frequently.
When it does, restarting X / Gnome / Logout-Login seems to fix the problem. But that also requires restarting all of my applications - which is expensive.
I recently found this in a related forum, and it seems to work:
setxkbmap
Got the solution from here.
